The 1825 game system lends itself to variations and
I particularly enjoy trying changes to the basic game.
The
variants presented here require some changes to the components.
Some are relatively minor. Others
are more radical possibilities that provide interesting changes.
Some are speculative and need more playtesting. I offer these not as criticisms of the basic game, but as
tribute to the flexibility of the core design.
I also use some minor
variants to the rules, which do not require new components.
Those are that included in the
rules section of this site.
There are many variants to choose from.
See my list of
recommendations for the ones I find most useful.
-
Station promotions
- These variants modify the
promotion paths for certain types of stations. The first set,
which I designed,
reduce the bottleneck caused by demand for the green tiles nos. 14 & 15
(generally known as 'X' and 'K' tiles). Another variant, by Ronald Novicky,
replaces the reasonably freeform nature of the original game with more
clearly defined promotion paths.
-
Ferry variants -
These variants add rules for the coastal
cities marked as bases for "steam packet" ferries. These cities
are named in white capital letters on the map. The
variants encourage the building of track to these cities,
giving more options to game play.
-
Single track tiles
- The regional kits for Norfolk and Wales
originally included single-track tiles, which could only be
laid and used by ‘3T’ or ‘4T’ trains. The original rules for
single-track tiles had some problems, so those kits were
replaced with new versions that just used ordinary track
tiles. This variant, by Mike Hutton, adds these tiles
back into the game.
-
Variant
kits -
I also provide kits
of optional tiles, single-track tiles, share certificates and changes to the
board. This photo shows the result of a game that used
several of these kits with Unit 1 and the three regional
kits.
-
Kit DB1
contains new tiles that provide more options when promoting
stations. It can be used on its own or with my station
promotion variant.
-
Kit DB2
makes minor adjustments to the SECR in Unit 1 to improve
game balance.
-
Kit DB3
consists of several small changes to the
Unit 3 board
in an attempt to make the historical routes more likely to
be chosen during game play.
-
Kit DB4
gives some simple markers for use with my variant for
ferries.
-
Kit DB5 provides tiles and
share certificates for use with the single-track
variant.
-
Kit DB6
comprises charters and share certificates for extra minor
companies.
-
Kit DB7 offers some
alternative grey track tiles.
-
Kit DB8
provides alternative trains for some of the minor companies,
with the primary intention of encouraging track development
in less developed areas of the board.
-
Metropolitian railway -
This variant, by Geoff C, adds a minor company running from
central London.
-
Other variants
- The first section lists variations that some other players
use and that I have not adopted. The second
section lists some possibilities that I have yet to try.
